Caregiver transition after move-in

When an aging parent or loved one moves to an assisted living or skilled nursing center, it can be a difficult adjustment for the person who has been the caregiver.

This transition can be filled with emotions such as guilt, loneliness, or a loss of purpose.

This is an excellent time to re-evaluate your own personal needs and find a path that allows you to maximize the extra time available and to create a new sense of purpose.

There are numerous things you can do to ease your emotional burdens while rediscovering the joys in life outside of being a caregiver.

Get Your Zs. Being able to get a full night of sleep without worry benefits your health and quality of life. By re-establishing your own routine, you can sleep peacefully and be energized for the new life that awaits you.

Write it Down. Journaling can help you manage your emotions while providing inspiration for how to get back to a personally productive life. It is one of the easiest ways to speed up your personal development by getting thoughts out of your head and on paper. Journaling can help you see the big picture, discover insights, gain clarity, and examine your progress.

Break a Sweat. Exercise is the fastest way to regain your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Join a local yoga class, the YMCA, or take swimming lessons.

Try New Hobbies. Make a list of hobbies that interest you, both old and new, and make a commitment to participate. Hobbies can be creative or artistic, sports related, or educational. You might acquire new skills or knowledge, such as learning a foreign language.

Travel. From day trips to exotic vacations, getting out and seeing new sights and meeting new people will free you from daily routines. Explore new places, try new foods, or learn new things about the world and yourself.

Meet New and Old Friends. Fill your social calendar with activities in your local community that spark your interest and invite a friend to join you.

Give Back. Numerous non-profit organizations need volunteers. Find a volunteer network in your community and sign up. Helping others is a sure way to find happiness and meaning for your own life.
